The iBIO Institute partnered with The Beloved Community, a community development non-profit on the southwest side of Chicago, for a series of college tours for over 80 students across Chicago. The tours provided students with information on college admissions and financial aid but also engaged them with hands-on science activities to increase awareness of science-related majors and careers.

The students’ first tour was to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where they worked with professors and students in the food science department to conduct a sensory evaluation experiment using Dr. Pepper.

The students also visited Michigan State University’s animal science department where they walked through the milking process. They also visited the bug house in the department of entomology and got up close and personal with spiders, beetles, and several other species of insects.

During spring break the students enjoyed a week long tour of the Ivy League schools. The students visited:

The students also engaged in cultural events including a historical tour of Philadelphia and a trip to Times Square in New York City. They also received a personal welcome and words of encouragement from world-renowned professor and author Dr. Cornell West during their visit to Princeton.
